to the Fairest One

Recounted in Homer’s Iliad, the origin of the Trojan War emerged from a quarrel between the goddesses Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite. The Goddess of Strife and Discord, (Eris) tossed a golden apple into a feasting game, often referred to as the Apple of Discord. Inscribed on the fruit was the phrase, “to the fairest”, and the three goddesses fought over it, each thinking themselves worthy. Needless to say, the radiant Aphrodite with her long, blond hair, goddess of Love and Beauty, won the apple and the affection of all mortal men.
